Humans of Canines (HoC) was founded in 2016 by Poorvaja Kumar, who experienced the benefits of dance and positive animal interactions in her life, and decided to spread this joy across the globe. Her initiative leverages the mutual benefits of the human-canine bond, to improve the physical, social and emotional state of people.
Studies have demonstrated that both, interaction with animals and dance movement therapy can help in lowering stress and anxiety, by releasing endorphins (hormones that trigger positive feelings) in the human brain. Keeping these effects in view, HoC combines creative movement activities alongwith positive animal interaction, in creating a unique program for individuals, and communities.
To achieve wellbeing, HoC focuses on three key areas – Canine Training, Animal Assisted Intervention (includes animal assisted activities, animal assisted education and animal assisted therapy) and Dance Movement Therapy. The workshops by HoC use music, movement, art, theatre and games. With an overarching theme of compassion, self-awareness, stress reduction and developing self-confidence, the HoC team Team organises workshops for schools, hospitals, mental health institutions, corporate and non-governmental organisations.
HoC partners with Certified Canine Trainers, Canine Behaviorists, Psychologists, mental health practitioners, school teachers and pet parents to design workshops and implement interventions. The workshops and individual training sessions by HoC are customised based on the needs of the beneficiary.
